No, almost all my clients buy their home with the 180-day “tourist visa” that is granted upon arrival into the country (it’s now just a stamp in your passport). You can then apply for a residency visa at your leisure and, in fact, you only eventually need a residency visa to move your household goods into the country duty-free and to take advantage of the Capital Gains Tax exclusion when you finally prepare to sell your property in the future.
