Frequently Asked Questions For Buying a Home in San Miguel de Allende
Is there anything important I need to do after the closing, once I own my new home?

You will want to transfer the existing utilities (they are not shut off when the home transfers from one owner to the next) to your own name within the first few weeks, and typically your property manager will handle that for you—it requires they have a simple copy of your new deed and the old utility bill.

And you will want to return to the Notario’s office—or have your property manager do so—about six weeks after the closing to pick up the officially registered copy of your deed, called an escritura, which you should then keep in a safe place. And if any of the Buyers were not physically present at the closing, remember that you should create a will here in Mexico as soon as possible.
